Here's a site with a picture that shows a leaf reasonably clearly - did yours ever look like this?

Corokia frosted chocolate is a possible
Looking forward to my new garden with clay soil here in South Notts.

Gardening is so exciting I wet my plants.

    @Borderline and @GardenerSuze
correct. I just compared the leaves online and it is a Corokia Frosted Chocolate.
Wow, somebody must have changed the labels and the blind one didn’t see it.
It has to come out as it spreads 2,5 meter wide and high.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this question.  👍

Is the garden centre local to you? If it is, it might be worth showing them your pictures and the label, see if they can give you a refund or some credit against something more suitable. The worst they can do is say no.

It can be grown as a hedge so you can cut it back. See if you can find a home for it. I grow C cotoneaster and I love it. I prefer it to caryopteris personally.

  • @JennyJ this was the NT shop at Stourhead. Completely clueless what shrubs concerns I believed what was written on the label and it was green when I bought it.
@GardenerSuze I just took it out and planted next to the ugly fence. It will not have much space to the front and back but gas got 3 meter space to the left and right side.
It looks weird and I think this was the reason why I had to ask here in the forum.

I can’t thank you all enough for this help. You saved my bed.

They still have a responsibility not to sell wrongly-labelled things. Maybe mention it to them if you go back (I think Stourhead's in Wiltshire like you isn't it? Not my neck of the woods though so I could be wrong).

  • @Songbird-1 yes I’ve got another Caryopteris- a real one 😂 - and the leaves look like in your picture. 👍
my Caryopteris just starts to get leaves again.
@JennyJ Yes it’s around 90 min from us in the South West of Wiltshire. Next time I check with the internet before I buy again a shrub.

Well, I hope you find someone who can give it a home, and something else more suitable to fill your space.

Just to go back to your photos, I don't think the other one is a Philadelphus either. That emerging foliage doesn't look right. See what others think though.
Perhaps wait a little while to see how it looks, and it'll be easier to ID.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
