Hiya ❤️ I've lurked on and off for the last three or so years I think? I have a wee postage stamp sized garden in South Wales that was built up at some point so is top soil on top of a heck of a lot of builders' rubble, sand and random detritus and old garden walls (discovering a wall after having already excavated an entire bag of solid cement made putting in a tiny wildlife pond far more difficult than it should have been) on top of solid clay. There's so much rubble, grit and sand my back garden is remarkably well drained, despite the clay. I like plants my slugs don't eat and tend towards natives and cottage garden plants.
Hello gardeners I have been reading through the forum over the past few weeks and thought I'd say hello! I bought my first house last summer where I live with my dog, and I am thrilled to bits to finally have a garden of my own. It is suburban Staffs, clay soil, West-facing, about 10x8m, and built around 15 years ago, so mostly packed with rubble etc when you start to dig. There are a few things planted by the previous owners, some rhododendrons which look very unhappy and I'm guessing it's the type of soil. I'd love it to be a take on a modern cottage style, with as many roses as I can fit in... I find a big bit of lawn with tiny borders around it very dull, I'd much rather have many plants and flowers There is an awkward side bit and also front garden too, which perhaps I could seek your collective wise advice on in time Lots of gardens nearby are all paved over, and as it's my first garden, this is a fabulous forum to be part of. I am fascinated by photos of people's gardens so thank you for sharing them here. Oh and here is my Olivia Rose Austin at the end of last summer. (The shed has since been given away because naughty rats kept visiting!)
Yes, I thought that was a lovely introduction too, welcome to the forum @queen. I'll look forward to the improvements you'd like to make to your new garden.

I know some bits of S Wales as I have relatives on the Gower and near Swansea. Love a wildlife pond … we have one too 😊
