variegated laurel

I have three pieces of variegated laurel which has been in water for 3 months(in a vase and water changed frequently).
The laurel now has lots of long, stringy roots.  Can I plant the laurel straight into the garden or do I need to put them in pots in compost to establish more.
Many thanks for all advice.

I would pot them on into a mix of garden soil and compost, into 6 inch pots, then when the roots fill the pots, plant them out.
