Laying turf where NoMow was...

Hello

First ever post here, and very new to the world of gardening.

We moved into our house and the back lawn was actually AstroTurf. As my wife is pregnant we wanted to get a proper lawn. I have pulled up the astro and wanted advice on what to do next.

The ground is very compact and a mix of dirt and tiny stones etc (assume they did this for flatness and drainage of AstroTurf). I can dig my fork in about 8cm or so. If I laid a further 7 to 8cm of topsoil on top, would that be good for laying turf? I don't have any special tools or much money so trying to do the best with what I can :-)

Thanks
Simon

    Hi Simon,
I fail to see the relationship between your wife's pregnancy and your decision to replace the artificial lawn with proper lawn. ;)
Anyway, welcome to the forum---and best wishes for the forthcoming happy event.
You are invited to a virtual visit of my garden (in English or in French).

Preparation is the key, also making sure that you choose a good quality turf when it comes to laying it. Have a look at this to give you some idea of what's involved (l've no connection to the company,  but it covers the general work).

You want to get it right first time, you'll be busy enough with other things very soon  :)

I too was wondering about the pregnancy bit! I would want to know, how big is the area, which direction does it face, any trees.could we have pictures.a small north facing (muddy, wet,) lawn, under trees, grass doesn't want to grow.
  • Hi Simon
Enough time has elapsed now. Just wondering how your lawn is settling in.
Also wondering how your wife’s pregnancy is coming along? Maybe you’re a dad by now?
    thanks
