GM tomato seeds

I collected and planted some seeds from a Pitako tomato that I bought in a supermarket and they have germinated. Will they grow true to their parent? I know that GM plants are not everyone's cup of tea, but it is claimed that there are health benefits from purple tomatoes.

Hm. Was it a beef tomato? or a small one? I can find two tomatos with the same name, only one is GMO and I can't find anything saying that it is actually on sale anywhere yet.

If it is a beef tomato then it is not GMO I can't see if it's an F1 or a open pollinated one so no idea if it will come true.

I don't think there are any GM tomato seeds available in the UK.

It's a beef tomato (as per website verdita.es).
As I say, I collected the seeds myself from a tomato that I bought in M&S.

  • Sacko  there no GMO vegetable crops
    sold fresh in supermarket.

To my knowledge M&S don't sell GM food

As for whether they will come true to type, l think you will just have to wait and see. I think l'm right in saying that only F1 seed is guaranteed to come true to type, although l stand to be corrected.

The beef tomato is NOT gmo it's spanish as far as I can see. @AnniD it's the other way F1 is a cross between two stable varieties and will not come true to type.

So to replete your tomato is NOT GMO and comes originally from Spain I cannot find if it is a F1 or open pollinated But it seems to have a patent on it so it is probably an F1, still worth growing though just to see what you get.

Thanks for this. I guess I must have assumed that it was GMO because it is purple (if you type purple tomato into Google it comes up with a lot of GMO articles). I'll be interested to see what the tomatoes come out like.

There is a GMO tomato with the same name, developed in Norwich so very easy to get muddled up there. It doesn't seem to be licensed for sale anywhere.

You can do a lot of wild and whacky plant breeding and genetic play without the intervention for GMO. There are plenty of great 'black', orange or stripy toms out there, as well as purple.
