Are people sowing their carrots now?

Hi all,
Would you say its safe to sow carrots now, or should I wait until risk of frost passes?
Thanks

@tuffnelljohn, Up to you really. I haven't sown mine yet purely for lack to time but as you're in Devon you could take a chance on sowing now. Just keep some fleece handy to fling over the rows if the weather turns cold again.

  • I usually wait to about mid April as I found my earlier sowing tended not to do well, but I know others who do sow now

For reasons we don't understand we haven't been able to get carrots to germinate outside for some years.
So we have sown them in our polytunnel and had great harvest for 3 years. This year the carrots do not want to germinate and so we will give it a couple of weeks and have another go.

I plant mine out now in the ground, but under a cloche. Then do a second round end of April, so when the seeds poke through there are fewer frosts to cope with.
  • I leave them as late as possible , they say it narrows the chance of carrot fly.
