Nearly 4 months ago I put some dahlia tubers into the shed for the winter. I've just had a peek. Guess which of these 3 is the shop-bought Riviera and which two are the mouldy remains of the ones I grew from seed
You may have to improve your storage methods! I dust mine off and put them into dry compost - dust dry, not damp. Then they go into plastic crates in the garage. The little ones are always less likely to make it but there shouldn't be all that mould. Never mind, better luck next year!
Yes @Posy. The three tubers from plants I bought look ok. The two that I grew from seed, not so much. Stored in the same conditions but it seems the puny home-grown specimens needed more TLC
I was never able to store them at my last house. Either the mice ate them or they went mouldy or shrivelled. So I left them in the ground and most of them came up again, having survived Dordogne winters of up to -10°. Bishop of Landaff never made it though, although the Bishops Children that I grew from seed survived.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Update - even though my attempt to store the homegrown tubers failed miserably, the first of the 'proper' specimens is showing signs of life after wintering in the shed:)

I was fairly confident but it would have been a right kick in the teeth if some imposter had conned me
Wonder if any of the other 3 will follow suit anytime soon....
