What is this on my garlic bulbs

Good morning al

I planted some garlic on Oct / Nov for the first time and curiosity hot the better of me d I pulled one I to see what it looked like

The bulb hadn't ripened and there were some unidentifiable black "blobs" under the first layer of the bulb.

Does anyone know what they are

Many thanks

They look a rather like either small or baby slugs - but that's a guess

Hi @Pete.8, they were very firm when I tried to squish them with my fingers
