Boxleaf honeysuckle advice

Hi there,

I've just pruned an overgrown boxleaf honeysuckle back to bare wood today, just on the side. Took off maybe six inches or so in some places. How long does it usually take for fresh growth, will it come this spring? Also I've just realised its due to get to 2-3 degrees early Tuesday morning, will it harm it? Should've checked beforehand really. Thought we were out of the woods with the really cold temps.

If anyone could lend me their wisdom, it would be much appreciated,

Thanks.

Do you mean Lonicera nitida ?  If so, they are usually pretty robust and just need regular trimming to keep them in shape.
Perhaps posting a photo may help to get some info/advice.

Temps like that won't trouble it, even if there's a light frost  :)
I'm assuming the same - that it's a Lonicera nitida.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Yeah sorry, its a L.nitida. it wasn't my hedge so I think it's just got a bit overgrown. This is it after I'd finished, though I haven't got a before picture and unfortunately I just can seem to post it the right way round so apologies for that.

It should be fine. It's tough stuff  :)
As long as it doesn't get dried out, it should grow away well over the next month or two.
If you wanted, you could clear round the base and stick some compost down, or give it some slow release food, but it isn't vital.  :)

There's a problem with photos just now, so don't worry. If they're over about 1MB they come out sideways.

Agree with @Fairygirl - a bit more "tidying" on your side should see it bounce back before too long :)
  • Thanks for the advice. What do mean by tidying? Do you mean the top, or just by the base? I have still got that the top to do but it's just getting a trim to tidy it up. Nothing too major.
