Hi I have a Kew garden Rose which was newly planted last year . I have noticed black spots on it stems. I have not grown roses before so can anyone advise if this is okay , nothing on leaves.

'Kew Gardens' does get spotty canes, normally this is nothing to be alarmed about and the rose will be healthy and floriferous regardless... however yours has quite a touch.  What are the cultural conditions like around it?  I can see all sorts of weedy stuff in the background, are those plants surrounding the base of the rose?   the thick grey trunk to the right doesn't look especially healthy either.

I would like to see more base photos of your rose..

This is normal spotting on Kew Gardens..

..this is similar but still nothing to worry about..

..during summer you will get nice shoots like this..

...if you got your rose direct from David Austin, remember they have a 5 year guarantee if you are not happy.  Unless you got it from somewhere else?..

  • Lol. There probably is some weedy things going around I had some wildflowers about there last year so I’m not sure what’s growing  back. The stick is a very sad apple tree I was given about five years ago as it nearly died. I have tried to nurse back to life. It blossoms nice but the apples don’t taste good.

  • It was from David Austin.

Oh ok, thanks...  that's nothing to worry about, your rose looks quite good to me.. spotting on the canes is very typical of this rose..
..  I would be more concerned at its closeness to your old apple tree although it doesn't appear affected so far..
