  • Re scale: these are pieces of an upright shrub but partner can't remember size or shape.
Think I might suggest a visit to the man and his garden to have a closer look!

@GardenerSuze, my first reaction was Mesembryanthemum. It could also be a Lampranthus - I had one growing as an alpine last year. See what you think: Lampranthus roseus|rosy shining plant/RHS Gardening

Another option, take a look at Crassula Sarcocaulis, Bonsai Crassula. They can be gown outside in mild areas.
  • @Plantminded Thanks for your input still puzzled. Just looked at Lampranthus roseus and yes a possibility. A succulent, woody stems and red flowers?
Looking forward to my new garden with clay soil here in South Notts.

Gardening is so exciting I wet my plants.
  • Just for scale. Lampranthus having woody stems looks possible. I hope to visit the garden one day soon and may post a photo of it growing in situ.
Thank you for your help and suggestions.
  • @Wistie2 Good luck would love to see a photo when you have one of the flowers.

  • The video on the Burncoose link shows the rigidity of the stems.
I am very grateful for your time and this information.

Years ago there was an online gardening forum linked to BBC Gardeners' World. I remember the names Obelisk and Constant among many regular contributors. I spent more time online in those days. It was shelved, possibly linked to BBC funding cutbacks? Is this the same?
    I will have a forage!
    Thanks again.
