Re scale: these are pieces of an upright shrub but partner can't remember size or shape. Think I might suggest a visit to the man and his garden to have a closer look!
Just for scale. Lampranthus having woody stems looks possible. I hope to visit the garden one day soon and may post a photo of it growing in situ. Thank you for your help and suggestions.

Years ago there was an online gardening forum linked to BBC Gardeners' World. I remember the names Obelisk and Constant among many regular contributors. I spent more time online in those days. It was shelved, possibly linked to BBC funding cutbacks? Is this the same? I will have a forage! Thanks again.
