I'm thinking the first one is a silver birch seedling. As soon as the leaves come out a little will you put a picture up please?

    Yeah, I'm thinking cherry too.
Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border - where old gardeners often wet their plants.
  • The 2nd one has the growth habit of a Kiwi (Actinidia) vine of some type.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Interesting I agreed with Victorian ..salix/willow
(Quote...Second one is a corkscrew willow, possible golden curls)
    Have turned pic.

That does look like the branches off my corkscrew willow that I "hoover" up with the lawnmower.  This is an old picture but the full trunk in the picture is the willow.  It can't grow next to that fence if we're correct!
  • @Silver surfer Sorry, I misread as 'corkscrew hazel' rather than willow, which I think it probably is (have never intentionally grown a willow!) :)  One way for the OP to be sure is to check for hairs on that gangly green growth from last season, but I couldn't tell by zooming the photo. Actindia can have quite hairy new growth, often tinged red.

  • Thanks all.  Will definitely have to remove the willow and will post pics of the buds once they open (although I think that’ll be something big and have to come out soon too!)
  • Hi all, for those who asked to see this with leaves - here it is! I’m pretty sure ‘hazel’ now too! Going to put on our community Facebook group now as it’s not going to work in our garden!
