Flexi Tubs

Hi All.  We have just finished assembling our poly tunnel / green house 3m x 6m.  We are hoping to use flexi-tubs (recyclable) for tomatoes and root vegetables in the green house etc.  Our general nursery vegetable plants will propagate on our existing shelving.  We are hoping that our old knees can last a little longer so we can enjoy learning and sharing.
If any of you are using flex-tubs, can you share how and why.  Thank you.  Vicky.

I only use flexi-tubs for collecting weeds/leaves/twigs etc. which are ideal but they don't last more than a few years. You would need to puncture the bottom for drainage if you want to use them for growing veg.
What might be more useful are the fairly big, black plastic/rubber tubs that come with handles and drainage holes. They look more substantial and cost about the same I believe. I've had a clematis in one for a few years now, it's lighter to move than terracotta pots and doesn't dry out so much.

Do you mean this kind of trug?  I've used them before. Very hard wearing. They were fine. Thicker one are good for making ponds.

I bought rigid plastic , two handled , 35l pots for about £6 each. I reckon they'll last a life time.

I used 2 to repot some bamboo.  They're pretty big clumps now (75l trugs) but  they're so much much easier to move when I fancy a change on the patio!

  • I hope your weather has been kind to you this week.

Thank you all for sharing.  I now have eight good reasons for buying a few large, flexi-tubs, for our new green house / poly tunnel.

Like @Lizzie27, I use them mainly for clippings and prunings etc.
I've kept shrubs in them that I'm relocating or giving away etc, but not for a long time, as they can be a bit awkward to move around if you don't have one of those little trolleys to shift them, or a spare pair of hands to help get them in and out of a wheelbarrow. They tend to collapse a bit too much.
If you're keeping them largely in situ @victoriacadams , they should be fine for all sorts of things though. DIY stores have them all year round, and supermarkets have them in spring, as do all the cheapo shops if you have one nearby  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
