£28 for a small spade is better value than £32 for a knife so why do the knives cost so much?

For a fairly high-end Japanese-made product, I don't think it's that steep, personally. A pair of Felco 2 (Swiss) is usually £40-60. There might be a fair comparison.

My hori hori knife is a brand called Barnel. It has one smooth and one serrated edge. It came with a tough leather sheath which does give protection when its being carried. I quite like the fact that it has a ruler on it too which helps when bulb planting.

Yes you have a point Fire. I'm thinking of buying myself Felco 9 for my birthday so it's all relative really.

I'm very much the sort of person that prefers to buy one expensive thing that last for decades than many cheaper things that fall apart. I tend to mull expensive buys for a long time and do stupid amounts of research.

Me too and that's why I'm questioning the Hori Hori knife. I'm still dithering about the Felco 9's.

  • I've taken the plunge and have ordered the Japeto Hori Hori. I selected that one over the Nisaku as it appears to have a slightly larger guard fron the handle to the blade. Also Japeto is full tang and Nisaku is semi tang and comes with a decent pouch. Based on your comments and other reviews these seem to be the favourites. My OH is horrified as I am rather accident prone but I have promised to be careful - he had tried to talk me out of it. I have a couple of beds with heavy clay and stony soil and its hard to get between the plants to weed properly with other tools. Can't wait till it arrives!

That's good mandyroberts. Will you let us know what your findings are please?

People on other hori threads have previously discussed the difference in metals. Carbon steel is very strong but has a tendancy to rust. Aluminium is cheap but not strong. So stainless steel is a good compromise.

If you are thinking of buying, maybe take a squizz at some of the other hori threads.

When it arrives take it out of the sheath and wave it at him.  That might shut him up.
