Just to say thanks for the help and advice. I used the 3" auger with my cordless drill and everything went quite well, far better than I could have hoped for. The only problems I had was that when sorting through the whips I had been sent, a fair portion of them were nothing more than 'twigs'. a bit of a disappointment really.

Even small whips can make good hedge plants once you make the extra effort required to keep them clear of weed competition. Some suppliers are better than others in terms of the size and quality of what they sell so might be worth avoiding the supplier you got them from if they are particularly poor. Planted 100metre of hedge with less than ideal stock about a year back but with a bit of extra work weeding the area this new section of hedge is looking now like it might succeed even if I have had to fill in a few more gaps than in other areas of hedge I planted with better stock. Paid a bit more for this years hedge planting and they are better plants so it pays to shop around. Planted over 150 yesterday so only another 600 to go over the next few days.
Thanks for the reply Rob and the best of luck with the remainder of your hedging.
