Greenhouse Staging

Moved house and for the very first time I have inherited a greenhouse! It has an earth floor either side of a paved path.  Can anyone advise of the type of staging I need for propagating and growing fruit and veg.  There's so many choices via Google I'm confused!

Can we have a picture, depends on your budget. I bought cheap fold up metal staging on e bay. That's now in a lean-to. Hubby built wooden staging the whole length of one side in our veggie plot green house.
  • Easy enough to make your own - that way you can incorporate a potting bench and pot storage too.
Depends on size of GH and what fruit and veg you intend growing.

Earth floor!  Make sure you put slates underneath the uprights to separate them from the soil and prevent them from rotting/rusting?
  • Enclose photo of my greenhouse. Was thinking of a metal bench but with slats or not?

If it was me, I'd use a folding table/bench, preferably outside unless raining, to keep 'wasted' space to a minimum?  After all, it's your plants you need to keep warm, not the bench.  So many GHs are cluttered up with flower pots, bales of peat, canes etc., thus losing valuable growing space.

Your first decision has to be about how you wish to use the greenhouse - and that is difficult when you have not had one before! Many people grow in the ground inside the greenhouse: in this case you need a minimum of paving and staging and a maximum of bare soil. Some people use growbags or containers/seed trays to start off seeds/grow on plants or for the whole life cycle, such as tomatoes or exotics. In this case, you may want soil on one part and staging on another. People like me have a solid floor and no choice at all.
If I were you, I would have a look at some books about greenhouse gardening and think realistically about what you want to do. If you do choose staging and money is not too much of an issue, wood looks best but aluminium lasts longer and is light and easy to use, move and clean. I'm not keen on slats because the slat always seems to be in the wrong place for my pot, but others may disagree.
Take your time and enjoy learning. Greenhouses are great.

Thank you. Good advise about the pots etc. I have a shed next to it, so much make use of that for the bits and pieces

About growing in the ground, the GH had weeds up to the roof and shading. Took me  a day to clear the weeds and 2 days to scrub  inside and out! Can't have been used for years. Thought one side two tier bench and the other side, tomatoes, cucumber etc in pots the otherside. What do you think of weed suppressant with gravel under the bench? Read somewhere about spraying the floor when hot.
