Well, that's different. I guess some would think that's great.

Pic was added with tongue firmly in cheek  ;)

Though, with my practical hat on, it does seem a good idea for storing all those plastic plant pots that always appear to be in the way.

    Yes I guessed that Jenny_Aster  :)

I need a new project now that the gate is done. I just happen to have 2 long lengths of heavy duty chain, can hardly lift it. I'll take a photo and post it to see if any of you can give me some inspiration.

    This is a tough one.
The first picture is what I did with some chain that I had and used to take away the dreariness of the post and rylock fencing between me and the woodland at the side of me so I don't want to replicate that. In any case, the 2 pieces of chain that I've since acquired are too heavy to do that.
The second and third pics are the chain that I need a use for, something ornamental. One piece has a hook on the end and is about 3 metres long, the second piece is about 2 metres and a little bit thicker. Both are far too heavy for me to lift, can only drag them.

If you've somewhere string enough to hang it, it could be a rain chain?

Or coil it decoratively, à la Derek Jarman's Prospect Cottage garden?

  • I'm just about to drape 4 50+ft x 1inch ropes (2 multicoloured, and 2 navy) mooring ropes from our ex-boat along our fencing. They'll serve to attach climbers and provide a bit of interest (more interesting anyhow than garden wire). When done I'll attach a pic, unless of course it looks naff ;) Chains might be too heavy for wooden fencing though.

The ropes were intended for use as 'stepping stones' - I passed a garden with coils of rope set in the lawn. I've no idea if they were set in concrete, sewn into a coil, or both. It did look rather good. Chain coiled and used as stepping stones would obviously be hardwearing, though doesn't concrete react to metal?

What are you like with a welder?

When you posted  a photo of your hedge on another thread recently Uff, I thought the chain in your border looked very well placed on top of your mulch of fossils!  It adds subtle interest and may possibly offer a home or shelter to some interesting wildlife.  I'd leave it there, it looks great!  Could the other one be coiled into a tight circle and used as a platform for a terracotta pot with some dramatic planting perhaps?

No doubt I would try and grow roses along them.

Plaiting the chains together might make for an interesting effect - then growing maybe a herbaceous clem through it, or similar.

Or laid out as border edging?

Fantastic ideas here, thanks folks. I like all of them and my problem now is which to go for. Actually, I could go back to the scrap yard and buy some more  :)
I can't weld but I know an engineer who would make me a standard lamp.

Jenny_Aster see the pic I took here of something similar with rope stepping stones when I went over to Mull and visited Lip Na Cloiche garden, a fantastic place, small but lovely. I assume she had hers in concrete along with the cobbles.
See also a swing I got a friend to put up for me, last autumn in the woodland at the side of me. You'll also see the remains of the rope that I found washed up on a Mull beach.
