Calculating the number of plants

I want to add some Erigeron Karvinskianus to a set of old flint steps (10 steps in total), how do I calculate how many plants I need to create a good display? Many thanks.

What are the dimensions of the steps?
How are you planting them? In pots? In cracks?
If it's the last option, do you want the steps covered, or just a random look?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

If you just put one near the top it'll have seeded itself all over within a few years.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • The height and spread of each plant may help you gauge the number but as @Fairygirl says, it will also depend on how you intend to plant them.
  • In the cracks of the steps and a random look. I will check the dimensions of the steps and the spread of the plant.
