grass matting

I am a volunteer at a community garden, we have a Marquee which has grass underneath, its gets quite heavy footfall which is causing wear to the grass. Has anyone any experience of using the different grass matting products that the grass can grow through to increase the wear and tear to the area. Any comments appreciated.
