Help with rose bush

I’m a novice gardener and moved to a new house recently where there are many rose bushes left by the previous owners. Most of them are doing well but this one seems to be growing a long stem which is green but the actual bush seems dead. Shall I cut the long stem and prune the brown stems from the actual bush. It did not have flowers this summer. Please help 😊

  • It looks like it used to be a standard rose. The top part has died and the green shoots are suckers. The best thing to do is to remove it completely.

I agree with pitterpatter, I don’t think there is any saving the poor thing. It should have been staked when planted, so it looks like it’s been rocked about in the wind, grown wonky, the rose variety grafted on the top has died and it’s suckered from the trunk.
