Seedling identification

This popped up in my garden and I decided to try and save it. Thought it was a tree, but after doing some research I'm not sure.

It's an avocado seedling, They can be kept as houseplants but always want to be trees so not really very suitable.
  • Is that the seed in the first pic? I wonder if it could be a (squirrel stashed) walnut?

I agree. They pop up in our compost heap from time to time and I’ve also grown them intentionally in the past. Pretty easily identifiable once you’ve seen one or two.

  • Thanks so much for this! Makes total sense of course, the avocado seed came from our compost. This is my first time here or posting and I'm really grateful for the immediate responses.
  • It’s good to be able to help.

There’s lots of info online about growing them on as houseplants. I like to nip the growing tip out once iff if gets to about 12” tall then it’ll grow sideshoots and can make a rather elegant houseplant for a light but not south facing window. Filtered light is good.
