Is it something to do with the browser you use @REMF33
I don't know much about these things, but I've found in the past that it can have an effect on various sites.

I’ve had pop ups that look very genuine, I know they’re not,  if you click on them you could be inviting trouble.
I don’t use an adblocker as I don’t get any ads on here,  if I get a pop up on any other forums or sites, I instal an adblocker which gets rid of it, then I delete the adblocker.

Gosh how do you avoid ads, Lyn?!?

The pop up is from GW website itself.

FG it probably is something to do with the browser, but I am not using anything obscure, by any means - just Google Chrome on a PC.

Anyway, after months and months of doing this, it's not, today. Maybe mentioning it has cured it... :) I do hope so. If it starts again, I will contact the website people, as it seems I am the only one with this issue.

    I use that too @REMF33
Perhaps if you just say nothing it'll be fine now .... ;)

Firefox AND Adblock Plus for me, no problems, though without ADP it is ads after ads!

The ads were excessive when I removed the ad blocker. Flashing and intrusive. Worse than on most sites! Maybe it was having a bad day...

I don’t know how I avoid ads, I used to get them, there would be a banner across the top advertising whatever someone had talked about.  I would know what the thread was before even opening it, then between posts would be strips of ads, now nothing.
the only pop up I get occasionally is the one asking to set preferences. Easy got rid of and doesn’t come back.

    Lyn

I suppose that you avoid ads because you are registered and logged in...

It popped up again just now.

If I turn the ad blocker off the flashing/animated ads take up more than 50% on the GW pages (not the forum). It's really intrusive.
I have contacted their web team.

What a pain @REMF33 - literally. I find any flashing images on screens very difficult to deal with, and very intrusive.

I don't get them with the adblocker I have though. Hopefully someone can help you sort it.  I never log out of the forum - I wonder if that helps in any way?

In my experience  if you’re logged in you don’t get that box.
If you do get the box it’ll invite you to register … if you click on that it’ll ask you if you’re a subscriber and you can click yes and then you lose the box.
I think that’s how it works.
