Saving water and hanging baskets

What do you usually do to save water after watering hanging baskets? Mine hang from a tree and have no planters beneath them. I prefer not to let excess water drip onto the ground so I put containers underneath them after watering, however, this can clutter the area and in general looks messy. Any advice?

Is it a waste, if the excess is watering the tree?

  • I don't wish to sound picky but if you're concerned about wasting water to that extent (and thats fine - your choice) I probably wouldn't bother having hanging baskets.
  • I soak mine in a bucket and keep re using the same water

I think we may be getting a solution to this posters watering problem later on.
or is that just me being curmudgeonly.

I always find it very odd when a person's profile is marked as private @Lyn ;)

That’s what prompted me to say that.

  • Wouldn’t it only clutter the area for ten minutes or so? Until the water has stopped dripping out?

I also use the bucket dipping method.
  • I suspect some miracle product was about to be recommended to take care of the invisible problem.

Assuming you are not going to land a basket-watering-device on us - just measure out the amount of water you need so as not to waste much. Mine take about 3 litres each, a little bit drips out, but it isn't much and not worth worrying about. If you only have a few baskets, pour slowly and wait until the water has absorbed before watering more. This is assuming you don't have 50 baskets. Whatever is under the baskets will appreciate the extra water.
