When do I prune this Heather please?

I have a large patch of 2 Heathers outside my back door.  One was in full flower in April (a mass of purple spikes) and now just has brown dead flowers on it which I have just trimmed back.  The other one has what could be either seeds (?) or new flowers forming (?) and I'm not sure which it is and therefore whether to cut it back or not.  We just moved here in December and I can't remember if it flowered or not. Could this be a Winter flowering heather??? I don't want to trim it and lose all the flowers if so. Thank you for any advice!

They look like buds, so that is likely to be an autumn/winter flowerer.
Always tidy heathers up after flowering, but don't cut too far back.
They get a bit woody over time, but if you do that, it keeps them fresh. You can always layer them or take cuttings to renew stock.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
