Deutzia

I have a 6 years old Deutzia grown to about 5ft tall x 4 ft wide, did not flower this year at all. Having a moan about this my very helpful gardener decided, without asking, to cut it down to about 1 ft. Still mopping up the tears!!
Do you think it will recover? - it is now bare twigs.

    Oh dear.
Not a gardener to do that!
Very odd. I wonder why it didn't flower in  6 years...they  normally flower when young.

Yes it will recover but will probably not flower in 2022.
Maybe it needs to be moved?

At least it's a good size for moving now.... ;)

Are you sure it's definitely a Deutzia?

Hope you sacked the 'gardener'... ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

It had flowered well, just not this year.
Yes, definately a Deutzia, still got label
Used the term Gardener loosely - I can't sack the "gardener" it is my son! being helpful!

I have been told they do not flower for two years after pruning - is this correct?

I was slightly concerned it might have been your wife @historyman  :D
I can't remember ever pruning any I've had, but yes - he might have pruned off the flowering stems.
If it's healthy otherwise, not much you can do.
Apart from docking his wages   ;)
