Canary Island Date Palm

mileyemileye Posts: 3
Hi guys, Im new here and hoping you could all give me some advise. I was reppotting my date palm and got pricked by one of the sharp spikes at the base of the palm. Ive read some scary things about the palms causing brain tumours and other nasty problems. Does anyone know much about these palms? I feel really silly going to the doctors or hospital over a little injury but have the worry at the back of my mind. Any advise would be appreciated.

There's stuff online about some nasty things happening (pretty rare) if a broken spine on the ground is embedded in the skin and not removed (apparently it can happen when children play on the ground underneath the palms).  However if the spine just pricked you and didn't break off and embed itself under the skin I wouldn't be too concerned.

Just the normal antiseptic cream ought to solve most problems ... but if it gets infected I'd consult the GP, armed with info from a reputable internet site about the problems of palm prickles.

I don't know if our pal @punkdoc is looking in ... if he is and I've said anything that needs correcting I'm sure he'll let you know.

Try not to worry  ... just keep an eye on it ... and welcome to the forum  :)

Maybe wear sturdy gloves and safety goggles next time 🤓
