Aubergine rust?

My aubergines look terrible and have produced a total of 2 fruits from 8 plants. See photo. From consulting Dr Google, it looks a bit like aubergine rust. But they don’t have the orange blobs on the undersides that apparently are diagnostic of that problem. Any ideas? I’ve grown them successfully for a few years, and the watering and general care was the same as ever. I’m going to cut my losses and pull them out, but would like to know what to do next year.
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.
