looks like sucker, from perhaps a cherry?

I agree, a sucker, but it looks more like some sort of plum or plum rootstock -- very persistent in my experience, and liable to pop up wherever the tree's roots extend. I could never dig deep enough to find the root they came from, so used to cut them off below ground. Otherwise they will create a dense thicket.
