Hi everyone, planted up a seed earlier in the year from what I remembered to be a butternut squash, but don't think that this is what it is!!!! Any ideas please
Without knowing exactly what sort it is it's a bit difficult to say. If you have more than 1 fruit of a similar size, I'd suggest you bite the bullet and try one.
If you took the seed from a butternut squash you bought it may have been a hybrid (so cross pollinated). If so, the seeds would not produce the same fruit as the parent did.
I recall when I grew butternut squash they weren't ready for harvest until around the end of Sept or Oct

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Thanks for all replies, cut all the others off as so many on it and not loads of space.....just left this one !! Oh well assume it wont ripen off the plant so I'll have to wait and take a chance in few weeks 🤞
@Pete.8 is right - Butternut or similar need to go another 8 weeks or so before they fully ripen but before any danger of frost. One good way to tell is if you cannot pierce the outer skin with a finger nail, they are ready to pick and store ( or use of course ).
Thank you all for your help, sounds like good advice . Especially about seed coming from bought butternut squash not always producing same fruit!!! Will definitely remember that info And will leave for another 8 weeks or so and watch Thanks all
