Bamboo Fargesia

BijdezeeBijdezee Posts: 1,484
Morning all.
I have this Fargesia and the ticket said 3m eventual (I assume) height but this is it's 3rd year in a large container and its still very low. I keep it watered and in late afternoon/evening sun. I had it in full sun but it didn't like that. Doing better in this position healthwise but the height is still disappointing. Anyone has experience of this variety?

I have a Fargesia. Don't know specific variety as as I snaffled it from the school rubbish pile - think it had been on display in the foyer!
I can confirm it is non invasive, though the clump does gradually extend, like a phlox or similar perennial. Mine is around 20 years old now and most of it is roughly the same height as me - 5ft3", with just a couple of canes nudging 6ft.
It grows in very moist soil, with its toes actually extending into a little stream, in a very shady spot and seems very happy, but 3 metres would still be a bit of a stretch for mine and it has only slowly reached the height it is now.
Yours looks healthy and well cared for but as it is in a pot it is probably going to be slower growing and may hit a full stop at some point where a bigger pot is no longer possible, so unless the variety is vastly different you may need to lower your expectations. It is still a lovely plant :)

Thanks both, I'm probably being impatient again 🙄 and I agree that being in a container might not be helping. I wanted it to go up for a screen. I don't have room for it in the ground. Garden is stuffed lol

Fargesia rufa is one of the smallest bamboos and not a good choice if you want height. 3m is probably the maximum for the longest canes, not the overall plant.
These things grow by getting slightly wider every year and the new canes are slightly longer every year. My plants are maybe three times wider than your pot and the canes grow to 1.5m, maybe 2m, I don't know exactly because I keep it to 1m, pruned with hedge shears in spring and then cutting back every cane that grows above it.
