Canker

Hi guys,

I have a few cordon fruit trees, 2 apple and 2 pear varieties. it looks like one of the apples and one of the pears have Canker on their main stem.

What's the best course of action. am i better off cutting my losses (pardon the Pun) and pruning the stem down below the canker and hoping a new bud breaks to use as a new vertical leader?

Any advice welcome.

Once a tree gets canker it’s a real battle to get control of it. If the canker is on the main stem you may save yourself time and heartache by replacing them with canker resistant varieities.

as its a cordon, could I not just prune it below the canker, and hope a new bud sprouts for a new leader?

It’s worth a try. Just don’t be surprised if the canker is already below the cut.
