Am  a beginner at gardening and will always be, I started too late and learn new stuff all the time but do not retain the information but hey ho will keep trying
I must thank this forum for the first bare root rose I ever planted.  Would never have done it without the advise on here
I planted 2, the Compassion was beautiful at first but subsequent buds did not do much, still looks healthy and will see whats wrong
Dublin Bay is gorgeous
Thank you all so much

Dublin Bay has beautiful flowers with a wonderful scent. It's a pillar rose. The branches will shoot up over ten foot into the air and they are very difficult to train as the branches snap easily if bent so be careful where you put it.

Ah right.  Will it be ok if I just keep cutting it back as the wall behind it is not very high? maybe should have planted other side where I have 6ft fence but no room there now
I have planted the Compassion rose against the fence.  Does this grow the same way ie upwards as it has grown very tall?

You could try it and see what happens. It won't do the plant any harm but you might lose flowers.
You could also see if you could train to to grow sideways. You need to be really gentle and do it when the branches are soft and whippy. If you try to bend it too much the branch will snap off . Just a very wide  arch is the most you could hope for
