What’s wrong with my roses?

SpecEmSpecEm Posts: 5
Hi all,

Not sure if you are able to help but I don’t know what’s wrong with my roses. I think they have black spot as well, but don’t think it’s what’s causing almost dry patches to appear on leaves. Pictures attached. Does anyone also have any tips to treat black spot on roses without using harmful methods to wildlife.

Thanks in advance,

Emily

Once you get black spot it is unlikely to go for the rest of the season. The main thing is to stop possible re-infection for next year. You will need to clear up fallen leaves around the base in autumn and do not allow them to stay on the soil surface over the winter time.

The pale patches on the leaves are most likely due to saw-fly damage. Not normally serious, but spoil the look of the leaves. See below link on how to spot them, and methods on how to deal with them in late spring to early summer.

Yes, black spot, plus sawfly larvae damage (small slug/caterpillar-like wrigglers) feed on the underside of leaves and leave that dry, lacy effect, badly munched leaves die off. Total menace, I’ve been plagued with them this year. Check the underside of leaves for the wrigglers and squish as many as you can and pick off the worst affected leaves. Looks a bit dry too, so a good, deep water at the roots, 10L a time, several times a week will help it recover and grow new leaves.
