Delphinium pruning advice

fizzylizfizzyliz Posts: 370
Hi, what should I do with these delphinium plants? Are you meant to let them seed/is it good to? They’ve been like this a while… or should I chop them down now? Where to? The one doesn’t have many leaves lower down now… thanks!

Cut the flowering stalk of at the base.

Thanks @Lyn - there will be hardly anything left, is this normal? What do I do with the seed pods? Thanks 😊

@Lyn cut it just above the soil?

Just cut wherever the main stem finishes above any foliage. You don't need to be too exact though - it just tidies the plant up and saves it wasting energy on seed production.
That helps the plant focus on it's root system instead   :)

@Fairygirl @Lyn and anyone else… I followed the advice… this is my delphinium now… is that new delphinium growth I can see? Is this normal? Do I need to do anything else with my original plant? It looks in a bit of a sorry state - unless it’s meant to go like that… thanks, trying to learn! Any advice appreciated 😊

You need to cut off all those long, dead and unproductive,  stems. They're of no benefit to the plant now  :)

Yes, that's new growth at the base in the first pic, and the 2nd.

@Fairygirl thank you. I’m sure I was told to cut the stems off to first leaf which is what I did… shall I just cut to the ground so there’s nothing there? Is it normal for the delphinium to have new growth like that at this time of year? There’s nothing near the other one… thank you 😊
