One of the geometrid moths. It won't do much harm by itself, and will soon pupate.

It's a stick caterpillar from the family geometridae, but there are a lot of different sorts. They turn into moths.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Thanks! Here's a close up of the handsome dude.
If it's a peppered moth, I'm glad to see they're a part of the natural order, blue tits eat them!

My friend, when aged about 4, wanted to be a polar bear when he grew up. I’d keep an eye on it if I were you.
