Cucamelon

Is it too late to sow cucamelon seeds, please?
I wanted to grow them last year, bought the seeds in August and then forgot all about them until now! 😟

About three months too late I would say.

My packet said to sow in April/May, so it’s a bit late but…

For: some say we are a couple of weeks behind in the season so you are only a few weeks out of range for sowing.
Against: mine took weeks to go from seed to seedling (maybe as cooler back in April) but this would limit your window for ripening.

I would have a go! I have some in a hanging basket, some in poly house and one in the ground…so far the basket is the most successful and forward due to the fact it has not been munched by pests. Good luck.

Ours were sown in Feb this year and we have one huge pot in our garden room and another in the polytunnel.
Garden room one doing very well with 3 developing so far but we are having to pollinate the female flowers.
Question how big do they need to be before you eat them?
This is our first year of growing them.

Generally grape-to-gooseberry sized. But we've picked smaller ones and they've been OK too. Try one?

    Will do and thank you.
  • Thanks everyone for your positive comments!
I will give it a go.
    😊
  • I'm not holding my breath ... but I sowed the seeds on Saturday 3rd (I waited for a 'seed day') and they sprouted yesterday (roots). Today when I got home from work one cucamelon was 1" tall!

Fingers crossed they have time to mature 🤞🏼@SheperdsBarn

I’m hoping mine will produce something…

Have you grown them before, @AuntyRach?
