spring flowering Weigela finished and now the area looks bare

Hey all

I have a beautiful Weigela in my garden which flowers every spring, but only if you cut it right back (after flowering) to about 2ft high.  After doing this pruning to ensure flowers for next spring, this leaves a large space in my border which looks vacant and ugly compared to the rest of my garden.

I'm looking for plants to plant around the weigela, that would flower in summer and autumn and not leave the area looking so vacant when the Weigela is cut back

My borders are not very deep so tall upright for the back and bushy for the front is probably best, any suggestions?

Try penstemons for the back and erigeron k. for the front.
