Nicotiana in pots

alfharris8alfharris8 Posts: 376
Have had a successful crop of Nicotiana Tinkerbell seedlings. First time growing them and wondering how many plants to grow per pot?
Have various sizes of pots but I don't want to overfill nor leave the pot looking mean so just wondering if there is a rule of thumb?
When you see containers being potted up on the telly they seem to really pack em in!
Thanks.

Ignore what you see on TV in the most part - look at your pots, the size and the plants you want to grow - stuffing too many in may look good on TV but not always successful "on the ground" so to speak. It is really a case of trial and error if the variety is new to you.  Pot plants require far more care/watering than those planted directly in the ground.
Try to picture the plants when they are mature and compare them to the size of pot you have. Enough room for the roots to establish and enable you to produce a healthy plant ?

I grew some nicotiana from seeds for the first time this year, I planted the seedlings in the borders about a month ago and they now take a massive amount of ground space - much more than I was expecting - at least a spread of 40cms. If you put some in pots, I would say less is more.

They are described as vigorous. Just difficult to imagine looking at them now. Am going to pot up again and see how they look when they have grown some more. Thank you 😊

I recently put 3 nicotiana babybella seedlings that I'd grown from (teeny tiny) seeds into fairly large pots... oh my, their leaves are enormous! Have almost eclipsed the other plants I added in too!
