What size pot should I use for an acer?

    They grow better when tight in their pots, so don't pot up too much. And it can stay in the same pot for 2 years, or until you see roots emerging from the bottom. 

    I read that the plant is ready to be repotted in a larger size pot if you lift the trunk and the whole thing comes out like a plug.

    It depends on the roots really, some plants i have bought seem to be ready to be already root bound while others have been over potted. I suggest you have a look underneath and check to see if roots are coming through.
