What is this beautiful shrub?

When we bought our house about ten years ago this shrub came with it. It always gives a wonderful display around this time of year but I've never known what it is. This is pure curiosity as it seems to be perfectly capable of looking after itself - I just cut it back occasionally.

    Yes - Weigela.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

It's gorgeous! Yes, they can more or less take care of themselves, but you could think about firmly cutting back the hedge behind, as it's encroaching into the space of the shrub and making it lean forwards.

The only other thing to know about them is that when they have reached this sort of size, you can begin renewal pruning. This means that after it has finished flowering, you look at the base of your shrub, find the most woody, dark and twiggy of the stems, and cut it out from the base. Fertilise with some blood, fish and bone. It will then proceed to generate healthy new shoots from the base which will have the advantage of stopping it getting weaker and older, and also keeping it to a sensible size. If only rejuvenating people were so easy...
