Should I use a roller?

i just wondered what the thoughts were on rolling turned over soil/compost renewed soil, before adding top soil ahead of laying turf? Should we roll over it with a roller or just walk it level before adding topsoil and walking it level again. 

Trying to make sure we have a firm level area for the new lawn.

Any thoughts gratefully recieved!

a roller will flatten out the top of bumps, but does nothing to the lowest bits. 
Walking over it methodically and raking is the way to go.
