Is this a weed? I thought it might be some sort of poppy? Thank you.

    Looks to me like one of the Opium poppies. Papaver somniferum. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Yes, poppy.
    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
