Spanish Bluebells: what do you do with them?

elderberryelderberry Posts: 117
They're pretty, fragrant, 'easy to grow'(!!) around here in SE England, and an absolute nuisance, crowding out every other plant and regenerating quickly from the tiniest bulblet. I didn't plant any in my garden, but I've got lots. The patches I dug out last year have regenerated. So what to do? In some ways, I'd like to retain them, but under some sort of control, because they have so many positive attributes, but eradication seems like the safest bet.

I've tried digging them out but the bulbs go down deep. I do dead-head them to prevent seeding and this year I'm going to try cutting them just below the surface to see if that will weaken them.

Hoe and forget until next year. There's not much else you can do.
I don't let them seed, and hoe most of them as soon as the leaves pop through the soil. The number is decreasing gradually but I'll never get rid of them. If any do manage to flower, I make sure they don't seed.

I've just deadheaded my small patch...they haven't spread at all because of that. I suppose if you want to reduce your patch you'll have to be patient and try to starve the bulblets of nutrition by chopping all leaves and they will get weaker. You'd have to dig so deep it would make a huge mess in most gardens...but if you're up to it...get ready to go really deep.

I just enjoy the flowers and when it’s over try and cut it all back to the ground or I try to cut all the leaves to compost and just leave the flowering stalk, hopefully less overcrowding but still extra work. I try to do the muscari at the same time.

Muscari comes out a lot easier but I try to dig both Spanish bluebells and Muscari out and bin them. It's a bit of a losing battle... I didn't plant either of them.
