  • Back again with a new weed- I scattered loads of meadow seeds like poppies and corn flowers in a part of my garden that is shady in the autumn and a few have come up but with all the rain this has appeared and I know it’s going to be a nightmare to get rid of but no clue what it is

That looks very like foxgloves. ❤️

Theyre overcrowded, so on a day when the soil is damp and they’re still small you can get a little hand fork and dig some up and plant them elsewhere ... water them in well and they’ll be fine.

They’re biennials so they’ll flower next year.

    😊

  • Oh wow amazing- thanks- I thought they were some awful weed!

Fingers crossed I’m right ... there are some other plants that look a bit like that ... Green alkanet is one which has leaves that shape, but they’re a bit bristly whereas foxgloves are softer leaves sometimes with soft hairs not bristles.

  • My Dad thinks foxglove too- he said they are easy to think out too- I shall leave it all to grow for a bit long - as I said it’s a meadow garden part of my garden that doesn’t get much light die to next doors tree so if they turn out to be weeds I will dig up and start again 😀

I wouldn’t leave it too long before you thin them out. They transplant much better if you do it early and they will grow bigger and produce more flower spikes if they have plenty of room to make a good crown in this their first year. They need to be a good 12” apart. 😊

Hmm, not sure they are foxgloves. They look like Stachys silvatica to me.  Hedge woundwort.  Do the leaves smell unpleasant when crushed?  They have a pretty purple flower though.

  • No they don’t smell and the leaves don’t seem to look as spiky as Stachys silvatica but it might be as they are too small at the moment to tell

Hi all- I posted last year a photo of a weed and we all thought it was fox gloves- turns out they weren't-  still no idea what they are but they seem to pop up everywhere including in the patio- photo below
