Hard pruning upright cotoneaster

I have an upright cotoneaster with arching branches that is about 4 feet tall. It has slightly outgrown it's space and at present it is looking a little bit sad and hungry. Is it possible to hard prune to the ground and let it grow again. Or what else would you suggest?
