Gladioli multiplying

I planted some Gladioli bulbs last year and they are just starting to come up again now. Every spot where I planted a bulb now has 2 shoots sticking up instead of 1, so I'm guessing they have multiplied? Does this tend to happen every year, will I have 4 shoots next year, then 8? At what point do I need to split them and what is the best way of doing so? Thanks

Gladioli produce baby corms that, if left, will eventually grow big enough to flower but, as this article states, they can end up producing a lot of grass-like foliage and no flowers.
