Please could I have suggestions for a medetaranean type climber for a South west facing aspect. We would rather not have a rose but we're looking for something that will flower through the summer. Thank you!
There are clematis that will flower for a long period over summer, especially those in the viticella group which includes a wide variety of colours and flower forms from bell shaped to the larger, flatter forms. They are reliably hardy.
Being a viticella, you can cut it back hard in spring, give it a generous feed of slow release fertiliser for clematis, roses or tomatoes and then make sure it never gets thirsty and give it occasional liquid feeds of seaweed or tomato fertiliser. Train the new shoots as diagonally as possible up the support and you'll have a vigorous and healthy plant covered in blooms.

When asking about suitable plants for a certain aspect, it helps to give a rough location - south facing in the North is somewhat different from south facing in the South. Inland or coastal will also make a difference

How about a Campsis - trumpet vine? orange/yellow tubular flowers. Should be hardy enough in Brighton, although they don’t like fierce winds so it depends on if it is a sheltered spot. Or not!

Most will flower in July, August and September but this one will start in June
