Using old turf to backfill and level lawn...

We are extending our garden slightly into an area with a slope so we are having a sleep retaining wall put in. We are going to take up the old lawn as we are putting in new patio, take the chance to level the lawn upto the retainer wall then top with new turf.  I am wondering to save on costs can the old turf (if cut very short) that we take up be used as back fill to even the slope area?

I should think you can but as it decompose the level will sink taking your grass with it but that could happen with whatever you use to backfill it will settle over time.
