How long do Robins nest for?

I think a robin has nested in my Small log store....

When would I be safe to start retrieving wood from it?

Or should I just write it off all together until autumn.

  • I'd recommend having a look at the RSPB site, but I believe they take around two weeks to go from laying to hatching/fledging.  They will likely abandon the nest if they think it's been discovered/disturbed.
Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

They spend a week laying eggs, three weeks sitting, and then up to three feeding. But even then it might not be free as the young may hang around in the woodstore being fed by the parents,  that's not including if they stay for a second nest.😁

Unless the weather improves I would buy twice what you need TheVanguard. I had a robin nesting in my shed in February one year, couldn't get the tools out or the mower as I too was worried I might spook them.

All was a happy outcome, babies fledged, tools retrieved and then, blow me, they were back at the end of April.  So I would make some long term planning as they may be there awhile if the missus is happy  :D

  • I'm sure I read they can have up to five lots of babies!

Well the good news is I don’t seem to have disturbed them...just seen them flying in..worms in beak. So guess they are feeding?

The bad news is the log store is on my patio and next to one of my favourite seating areas..so I do feel a little pushed out of my own garden!

I did build them a perfectly good bird box which they used last year....hopefully next year they will go back to that and I can have my patio back!

That is good news The Vanguard and sympathy for your banishment but you know sharing will make you feel good.  I wouldn't hold my breath on the birdbox though  :D
