What to put under roses?

Hi I am a new gardener really but have been enjoying creating recently.

We have some roses in some beds, two rose bushes in each bed. The roses are not so large at the moment.

The beds are generally shaded although gets a little sun later in the day.

The problem is that other than the two rose bushes per bed the rest is just mud.

What could I put with the roses to cover the mud? Any suggestions?

    I have a thick layer of bark under my roses... suppresses any weeds, and looks quite nice and tidy!

    Welcome to the forum. Would you like to underplant? If not you could mulch with wood chip...

    Adding manure mulch will help.

    Do you know what the roses are? It will help with figuring out their eventual height and width, plus flower colour, which will inform plant choice. Any colour combo you prefer or want to avoid? 

    I would suggest nepeta and salvia, and using bark mulch over any exposed areas while avoiding touching the rose stems.

    I think I would like some more plants (if that is what under plant means?)

    but I see the idea of wood chip would also be much more attractive than mud too.

    I think the one at the back is a bush rose called Moody Blue (fyniche) not sure about the one at the front.

    In the other bed (not pictured but is very similar) it has a golden wedding (arokris) and something else that has a label on it that says Harisma, is that a rose variety?

    Yes could very easily say that. It is wrapped around so the “c” could be hidden from me.
